The Ghost Highway
Once a legend roadway, Route 66 is now a ghost of its former glory. Although Interstate 40 has replaced much of the original path across northern Arizona, many sections of Route 66 remained and have now been preserved and buildings and other historical landmarks are being identified, preserved, and protected.
The towns, the roadway, and the scenic landscape is both inspiring and reflective as you travel the infamous Route 66. As I traveled Route 66 recently, I couldn't help but imagine the automobiles of the 20's and 30's which travesered the same course - the adventurous individuals going from one town to another in a days' travel. Some seeking riches, some seeking fame, some seeking to explore the mountains and canyons ... who would be the next to discover a mine ladened with silver or gold along the path?
With the redirected traffic along Interstate 40, some towns ceased to be, others shifted their centers somewhat, a very small number of towns managed to avoid complete disappearance although only a skeleton of their former being. It is these towns that are so special along present day Route 66 - roadways which appear to be frozen in time - like a ghost of the past.
